This class will prepare massage therapists to offer a safe and adaptive therapeutic massage for those who are actively enlisted or Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces and have transitioned well back into Civilian life.  This class will also prepare therapists to volunteer at Veteran service and support organizations.   Adaptive methods include those necessary for Veterans who experienced physical and/or psychological trauma during basic training, peacetime, conflict and war. Using an education model supported by extensive clinical experience and research, the class explores Veteran-specific professional practices and standards including:

  1. Communication & Respect
  2. Consent & Psychological Pressure,
  3. Competency & Scope of Practice,
  4. Boundaries & Power Differential,
  5. Discrimination,
  6. Therapist Self Care.

Although some instruction is devoted to topics such as post-traumatic stress and Invisible Service Wounds, this class does not offer treatment methodology for related therapeutic needs. Rather we prepare therapists by providing adaptive methodology.

Learning Objectives for the Class include:

  • Students will be introduced to Active Duty and Veteran-specific therapeutic concepts and related considerations.
  • Students will be able to list major Veteran-specific psychological and physiological conditions that warrant treatment adaptations.
  • Students will be able to conduct major practice/technique adaptations necessary for the Veteran client in regards to safety & comfort.
  • Students will apply professional practices and standards that are distinctive to the Veteran client.
  • Students will be able to identify methods to integrate learning outcomes to other areas of massage or to other special populations.

When available we include guest speakers such as local VA health care providers or local area Veterans.

All students will be provided with a manual/binder for the class.  Your class fee includes the cost of the materials.   Students who have finalized registration are eligible to sign up for electronic access via a Learning Management System after the start of the first day.  Instructional caution, graphic materials and the inclusion of topics on Traumatic Life Events (TLEs) may be presented in class. Those who have a personal experience with TLE’s, especially related to experience in the U.S. Armed Forces, are welcome to abstain from participating in that presentation of materials while engaging in a substitute learning activity.   Please feel free to contact the instructor for more information.
